The power of prayer to heal the sick is medically documented and a part of many religions. I can't -- and don't want to -- envision my great-grandmother seeing someone she loved hooked up to medical machinery. But I can easily envision her praying for someone's healing.But what about praying for someone's suffering to end?
What about not praying for someone you know is in medical trouble because you don't like that person or the person somehow "deserved" what happened due to lifestyle choices?
What about praying for someone to get better but that person just gets better enough to be medically miserable?
If prayer has power, then people who pray have responsiblity. What do you think is that responsibility? I'll put my view in the comments. I'm eager to hear yours.

I think our responsibility in healing prayer is to "give over," to pray for "what is best," not really knowing what that "best" outcome may be.
I like the Quaker saying "to hold [someone] in the light." That's what I think of when I "pray" for someone -- holding that person in the light, warmth and affection of me, of the greater group of family and friends, of a higher power: whatever force of comfort there is in the universe.
From there, I feel it would be presumptous of me to dictate an outcome. I have to trust that that force -- attach whatever religious name you're comfortable with to it -- knows what's best for the person who is ill, whether that outcome is what I want or not.
I always try to pray for God's will, also believing that He is good all the time and will do what is best. However, in times of great suffering, I have prayed for God to allow someone's suffering to end. I have also prayed intensely for a miracle healing. I have seen each done but, not always as I have asked. Does that mean God isn't listening or that my prayers don't matter? Absolutely not. I think about my first comment. God is good all the time and will do what is best, even when I don't know what that is. I do think prayer is one of the greatest responsibilities of believers of any religion. It is our communication with God and thus weilds great power.
I think the responsibility of people who pray for others is to pray God hears the prayers of the person who is the subject of the prayer. So, if I'm praying for someone who is ill, I pray God hears the prayers of that ill person. I am the outsider in that relationship between God and the ill person. All I can do is hope to ease the communication, not interfere with it.
I think all we can do is pray for the ill person to accept whatever outcome God has already decided on.
